Edward Maser, however, initiated in 1971 and especially in 1985 - after the discovery of early self-portrait (Inv Lg 1160) - a critical view towards this later paintings. The facial features of the sitter here in any case do not coincide with those of the actual portraits and self-portraits by Franz Anton Maulbertsch. Now, this has something to apply in spite of all the outstanding issues, a masterpiece of Austrian Baroque Art Performing portrait as one of the greatest mysteries in the Maulbertsch research. Monika Badger Nickel has suggested that this is a self-portrait by Johann Bergl, but other painters are not entirely ignore. Knowing the Schmutzer-portraits, as well as the "anti-classical" style suggest definitely that the painter of the portrait artist within the Vienna Academy is to be found.
